“Dairy Queen opened today and has free vanilla ice cream cones to celebrate the first day of spring. Do you mind if I take the girls there after practice?”
Thud. I wish my mama heart leapt for joy when I read this text from my daughter’s friend’s mom. It’s LOVE – wanting to celebrate friendship and the first day of spring with ice cream. But instead my mind started chattering:
Option 1: Go!
We all scream for ice cream! It’s fun. Let her have ice cream with her friends. “Come on Mom. Live a little. Don’t be such a Debbie Downer.” I grunted to myself.
Option 2: Take a Pass.
She doesn’t need anymore gluten, dairy and/or sugar in her life; she needs less, way less. You see everyday in practice through testing that gluten, dairy and sugar are the top three foods stressing a child’s health and happiness. “Walk your talk girl.” I said to myself.
I drafted a couple different texts to explain the reason for my decision, which quickly became a mouthful to a simple yes/no question. So I hit the backspace button and replied: “We’ll take a pass on DQ. Thanks for the kind offer though.”
What I really want for myself, my family, and the world is balance – otherwise known as health. Health is balance. We’re still working on the right balance for our family – it’s a journey of discovery and a process of acceptance.
It’s a hard to accept that even the highest quality gluten and dairy can lead to problems in two ways: your digestive system poorly digests gluten/dairy; your immune system overreacts to gluten/dairy. Here’s the bottom line: Even though you might not be allergic to dairy and/or gluten, being intolerant can still cause an inflammatory response within the body. BOTH food allergies and intolerances are stressors because they trigger inflammation in your body, and so does sugar.
Inflammation is a root problem in most chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity. Inflammation doesn’t stop there: asthma is inflammation of the lower airways; eczema is inflammation of the skin; and inflammatory bowel disease is inflammation of the digestive tract. Inflammation is a REAL stressor we need to address if we want to be happy and healthy!
