Sitting with a friend as she received her chemo infusion, I soaked in all the joy as we recalled shared memories. But when I returned home, my thoughts shifted to the loss of losing someone I love, which made me feel incredibly sad.
I immediately went for the bag of chips, fully aware I was trying to numb the uncomfortable feeling of sadness so I could safely return to the comfort of joy.
I want to live in joy!
When I met this friend 15 years ago, I had no idea the single most important lesson she’d ever teach me is how to live in joy every day no matter what. I think God gifted her with a bulletproof mindset that chooses to live in joy, even when really sh*tty things are happening.
But I wasn’t born with a bulletproof mindset, so I build mine every day.
3 Ways to Bulletproof Your Mindset:
- Fill yourself up first thing every morning
- Surround yourself with positive people every day
- Replace disempowering meanings with empowering ones
Fill Yourself Up First
Imagine starting your day filling yourself up with the feeling you want most in life. It’s like putting on your oxygen mask first thing every morning and then inhaling what you want more of – love, joy, freedom – before you do anything else. This morning “Cup of Joy” makes my morning “Cup of Joe” feel minuscule. That’s saying a lot because I’m a HUGE fan of coffee.
Surround Yourself with Positive People
You are a product of your environment, so actively surround yourself with peers who raise your standards. They don’t expect you to be perfect, but they also won’t tolerate neverending complaining and blaming.
Replace Disempowering Meanings with Empowering Ones
When “x” terrible thing happens, attach the most empowering meaning possible to it. Then when you think of “x”, you’ll feel more pleasure and less pain because what you think determines how you feel. Choose your thoughts wisely.
If you’re like my friend graced with a bulletproof mindset, congratulations! But if you’re like me, do the daily work and build yourself one, otherwise you’ll consistently be a victim to the pain life brings you.
