When I was a mom with an infant, toddler, and kindergartener, I wanted peaceful mornings. But getting all of us out the door and the oldest off to school was chaotic! I was overwhelmed and yelled, often. The girls would cry, and I’d feel like a bad mom.
I know from my 20 plus years of sporadic yoga and meditation practice that when I pay attention to my breath, I relax. I decided if I want peaceful mornings, I better teach my girls how to breathe and practice together often.
When they were tense, overwhelmed, or upset, we’d do a breathing game. Together we’d slow down our breathing and inhale through our nose, then exhale out our mouth, as if we were blowing out candles on a birthday cake. Usually, they’d be sitting on my lap, chest to chest. Every couple breaths, I’d repeat the mantra: “In your nose. Out your mouth.” Within 5-10 breaths, we’d both relax, which felt amazing!
Instead of tears driving a wedge between a child and a mama who wanted to lock herself in the bathroom to escape the chaos, this breathing game gave us a small moment of peace together.
One morning when we were running late for school, I was brushing one daughter’s hair and looked over at the other daughter who was obviously stressed about being late and guess what? She wasn’t crying. She was breathing! (…in her nose, out her mouth…) A proud mama moment.
See Step 05: Quiet Your Mind for how I teach kids in the office how to do a complete breath. I remind them they can use this stress relief tool anytime, anywhere and that it becomes second nature the more they practice.
It’s incredibly empowering for a child to regain emotional control quickly whenever, wherever they want.
