I don’t remember everything about the first day of med school, but I absolutely recall the first lecture of Cell Biology. In that hour, the professor pummeled me with a water hose of information. Afterward, I walked out, beat up thinking, “How am I going to memorize all this stuff?… I just want to help people.”
Years later, as a practicing pediatric physician, a Divine insight squeezed its way into my busy brain and gave me the ability to help thousands of children since then. I wished I learned these three words the first day of medical school:
Health is Balance.
That’s it – it’s such a simple concept. I explain health and dis-ease (balance and imbalance) with a teeter-totter. When you’re happy and healthy, you’re balanced over the pivot of the teeter-totter. Despite what life stressors plop on either end of your teeter-totter, you’re able to adapt and remain steady. But life inevitably drops something on your teeter-totter that throws you off balance, as if someone sat on one end of your teeter-totter. When you’re not able to rebalance (adapt to your life stressors), you’re in dis-ease, and your body lets you know with symptoms.
Illness and disease result from a combination of genetic and environmental stressors. In the past, we thought genes were out of our control. But the field of epigenetics has uncovered that when you adapt your diet and lifestyle to optimize your genetics, you optimize your health! Your body rebalances, and symptoms resolve.
