Problems and pains, both big and little, are part of life. As my wise mother-in-law says, “Little people little problems. Big people big problems.” A great reminder as we raise three children.
Recently our daughter tossed her phone onto her bed. No big deal until it bounced off her bed and somehow tilted in just the right way to slide down the heating duct. Down, down, down until it hit its final resting place – somewhere in the basement inside a closed duct system. Out of her reach and ours.
Loss usually brings pain. In this case, a phone you can no longer control – a minor problem. But what about big problems? Keep reading and learn how to transform your pains (even big ones) into infinite peace.
My husband and I discovered we can’t find the hard drive (yet!) that houses photos from a decade of our daughter’s lives growing up. Each time our hands came up empty during our search, a sick, sinking feeling swooshed through me. Loss. Instant pain.
It still pains me. But, the way I get back to a peaceful place is through perspective. Reminding myself what we’ve lost are pictures. We still have children to love every day as they grow up together – instant happiness.
We’ve all heard this saying, ‘Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.’ Most of our daily problems are minor issues we make into major issues – and more pain for ourselves and others. How can you shift your perspective on your current pain? For my daughter, I reminded her that her phone fell two stories. She didn’t. She’s alive and well.

FOCUS ON GRATITUDE
“What’s been the most difficult thing that’s happened to you?” my daughter asked. My answer was immediate. “Losing babies.” Sometimes our problems are so big, so significant that any way we slice or dice it, we only see pain. We struggle to shift our perspective on our situation. Our pain is so powerful; it’s all we see.
Miscarriages felt massive. I was so focused on the loss, I couldn’t see what I had to be grateful for. Until one day when I leaned into a Divine conversation and asked: “Why are these miscarriages happening?” One answer I received was, “They’re happening.” You see when you’re ready to see.
Sitting with this answer, I began to shift my focus from the grief that comes with loss to the gratitude that comes with growth. We were conceiving. Focusing on this progress filled me with more faith to trust our parenting journey. My perspective on being a mother shifted. I was mothering these little ones – even if the time felt too short. Everything happens in Divine time.

FIND THE GIFT
The meaning we attach to our life experiences determines if we live in persistent pain or find our way back to a peaceful place. As Tony Robbins says, “The difference between a problem and a gift is the meaning you give it.” Whoa. Every part of your story you think is horrible can become the greatest gift you give to yourself and others.
My life’s health challenges, both major (miscarriages) and minor (perimenopause), have created pain in my life. But, what I’ve learned processing through them has become an incredible gift I share with others.
