Over these past 6 weeks, I worked my way through a Tony Robbins course to squeeze the best out of me so I can feel more joy as I grow myself to serve others.

There are things I know I need to do to get my desired result for more vibrant health, more abundance, and deeper relationships. Some things get done, and others don’t get done. As my undone to-do’s pile up, I feel overwhelmed and further away from my desired result, which feels terrible!

Tony mentioned something in the course that struck me square in the face: “You don’t get your shoulds, you only get your musts.”

This simple statement helped me clearly see that the reason I didn’t check “x” off my to-do list is that I didn’t make it a must. I made it a should. The necessities always get done.

“The difference between ‘must’ and ‘should’ is the life you want and the life you have.” – Tony Robbins

You always find a way to get done what must get done.

Which begged me to ask myself: When will I make my should a must and why isn’t it a must now?

The answer hurt: I’ll make it a must when I raise my standards, breakthrough the ceiling I’ve put on my life – my health, my wealth, my relationships. I have to redefine my identity, and when I do, I’ll live into those standards, and all those shoulds will become musts.

How to Take Your Should and Make It a Must:

  1. Get Clear on What You Want
  2. Get Clear on Why You Want It
  3. Take One Step NOW!

What Do You Want?

When you get clear on what you want, make sure you’re as specific as possible. Change “I should lose some weight” to “I must lose 22 pounds.”

Why Do You You Want It?

The second step is critical: why you want something is your fuel to keep going when you want to quit. Make why soul deep. When your why makes you cry, you’re there. “I want to lose 22 pounds so I can fit into my skinny jeans” is a universe away from “I want to lose 22 pounds so I can have more energy to play with my kids.”

Take One Step Now

Even when we know what we want and why we want it, we’ll stay stuck if we don’t break down all our to-do’s to the single most important one that MUST get done today. Decide what it is and do it NOW! Not later today, not tomorrow. Now!

Keep your eye on the prize. Focus on the pleasure you’ll feel once you achieve what you want and the massive pain you’ll experience if you don’t.

When I know what I want, why I want it, and the one to-do I must do and still don’t do it, the reason is straightforward. I’m focused on the perceived pain I’ll feel doing the to-do, and not on the massive pleasure I’ll feel when I accomplish the goal. That’s it.

How about you?
When will you make your should a must?

After you to that one to-do, email me: I did it! You don’t even have to share what it is that you did if you don’t want to, but let’s CELEBRATE.
