How to Find Joy in Life's Unexpected Downpour

Ever found yourself in a downpour during a beach vacation, secretly wondering if there’s a mantra for joy? Or if you should just start twirling?

There I was, in an uber-cool spot in Miami beach. Surrounded by world-renowned street murals, palm trees, and… pouring rain, sloshing through puddles in flip-flops I’d bought only moments ago (No way was I sacrificing my leather Birkenstocks) and battling an umbrella with a mind of its own.

I was fuming. I’d been promised a sunny beach vacation; how could it be raining?

My family? Totally unfazed!

My daughters happily walked in the rain, hand in hand, chatting amongst themselves, as my cool and collected husband led us to the nearest cafe.

It was the same rainy day, but oh, how differently we felt it!

You know those moments when you’re pissed off, but everyone around you is fine, and somehow their joy makes you more pissed off?

While I was stuck in expecting sunshine, they were thriving by accepting the cloudburst weather.

So, fast forward to several minutes later when we arrive at this unique coffee shop that doubles as a music store haven — the walls lined with Fender and Gibson guitars.

As I sipped my first (and only) Chagaccinoyes, I too wondered what in the world a Chagaccino was and if it came with magical mood-enhancing properties – I watched my most music-adoring daughter test out different guitars as I chatted with the locals. (Yep, I'm that person — the one who dives into deep conversations with total strangers.)

Eventually, my mood shifted.

Despite how it started, and my very questionable vocal talent, we chatted, sang songs, and even got to experience a rendition of the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles so extraordinary I would have bought tickets to see it!

By the time we left that coffee shop my frustration was long gone, replaced with the pure joy of being in the present moment with people I love.

And let’s just say, singing off-key in public might just be a universally accepted form of therapy because nothing says 'living in the moment' like a heartfelt rendition of Extreme's "More Than Words" with strangers.

To this day, that rainy afternoon in the cafe makes our family’s top three vacation highlights. Talk about an unexpected turnaround!

So here's the takeaway: you can choose your emotions, Mama!

When you focus on what you can't control (like the weather) or what you lack (like sunshine), of course you’re gonna feel frustration, disappointment, and worry. And...

When you flip your focus to what you can influence (like a conversation) or what you do have (connection with others) you’re choosing to create emotions that feel fantastic, such as peace, joy, and freedom.

All you need for a joyful life is already within you, Mama. Soulfull Medicine is here to help you know where to look!

xo,

P.S. I know you’re probably seriously worried, so I’ll just tell you: my Birkenstocks are still in gorgeous condition. 😂 🙌🏻
